NSF Approves SSP Grease as H1 Food Grade Lubricant

NSF Approves SSP Grease as H1 Food Grade Lubricant

NSF International has approved SSP-1219, a lubricating grease from Specialty Silicone Products (SSP), for incidental food contact (H1) in and around food processing areas. This stiff, tacky lubricating compound is included in the current NSF White Book Listing of Nonfood Compounds at the NSF website. The NSF Registration No. is 156075 and the Certificate No. is C0096873-01.

SSP-1219 may be used on food processing equipment as a protective anti-rust film, a release agent on tank closure seals or gaskets, and as a lubricant for machine parts and equipment. The amount used should be the minimum that’s required to accomplish the desired technical affect. If used as an anti-rust film, the compound must be removed from the equipment surface by washing or wiping.

Why NSF Approval Matters

NSF International is a product testing, inspection, and certification organization that develops public health standards for products such as nonfood compounds. Examples include lubricants, greases, and other chemicals that are used in food equipment and machinery. During regular processing, these substances may come into incidental contact with food products. This can pose a cross-contamination risk for food processors and manufacturers.

Greases that are listed with the NSF Nonfood Compounds Registration Program meet stringent food safety requirements and receive an H1, H2, or H3 classification. H1 lubricants like SSP-1219 contain only base stocks, additives, and thickeners that comply with 21 CFR 178.3750, a part of the U.S. Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) that applies to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The H1 designation is also a continuation of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) product approval and listing program.

SSP’s NSF H1 Food Grade Lubricant

SSP-1219 is an NSF H1 food grade lubricant that repels water, inhibits corrosion, and features no separation at temperatures up to 500° F. This translucent silicone grease also has excellent dispersion, low volatiles, excellent stability, and a wide temperature range. SSP-1219 has a worked penetration in the 230 to 270 range and an unworked penetration in the 200 to 250 range.

Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) produces SSP-1219 at its Made in the USA facility in Ballston Spa, New York. This food-grade lubricant is available in these standard container sizes:

  • 400 lb. drum

  • 40 lb. plastic pail

  • 8. lb. plastic pail

  • 1 lb. jar

  • 14.1 oz. cartridge

  • 5.3 oz. tube
