Five Lessons from Electronica Munich
Specialty Silicone Products (SSP) recently attended Electronica Munich, the world’s leading tradeshow for the electronics industry. From November 13 to 16, the Ballston Spa, New York (USA) company showcased SpecShield™ silicones that help to protect electronics from the damaging, disruptive, and potentially deadly effects of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI).
Visitors to the SSP booth at Electronica Munich also learned how we provide low-outgassing silicones and other innovative materials. In turn, decision makers from across the electronics industry shared information with us about global markets for EMI elastomers and microwave absorbers, satellite and automotive applications, and workforce challenges. Here’s a look at what we learned.
Buyers of EMI elastomers need shorter lead times than some suppliers can meet. SSP’s tooling and molding capabilities, investments in production equipment, and ability to supply continuous rolls can strengthen your supply chain.
Suppliers of microwave-absorbing materials have merged – and that’s challenged the marketplace. In some cases, buyers are facing lead times as long as 12 to 14 weeks. The entry of new suppliers into this market segment would be welcome.
The growth of satellite applications is driving demand for EMI silicones with low levels of outgassing. SSP-502-65, a SpecShield™ elastomer, meets ASTM E595-07 outgassing requirements and, through post-conditioning, can meet NASA’s MSF-SPEC-1443 supplemental standard.
Cars and trucks are loaded with electronics that need EMI shielding. Conductive elastomers can meet shielding requirements but aren’t always cost-competitive. Automotive buyers also need high-volume quantities that may not be readily available.
U.S. manufacturers are struggling to fill job openings, but some companies are building a talent pipeline. For example, SSP has partnered with Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) to recruit CNC operators. SSP also pays higher-than-average wages and maintains a family-friendly atmosphere. Heico, which recently acquired SSP, shares this commitment to a strong and supportive company culture.
Stay Competitive. Talk to SSP.
